ICUMSA 45 vs ICUMSA 100-150: which sugar grade to specify?

Last updated: 17 August 2026

Quick answer: Buyers comparing ICUMSA 45 and ICUMSA 100-150 are usually choosing how white the crystal must be. Both are refined cane sugars. They are not raw sugar, and they are not interchangeable with brown sugar.

ICUMSA 45 sits at the low (whiter) end of the colour scale. Food and beverage plants that need a bright white appearance in drinks, fondants, or light-coloured baked goods typically specify 45.

ICUMSA 100-150 has a higher colour number. The crystal can appear slightly less brilliant. It may fit processes where colour is less critical, or where the buyer’s existing specification already names that range.

Do not choose a grade only because one listing looks cheaper in a broker message. Price moves with volume, freight, packing, and timing. The wrong colour grade creates rejection risk at destination.

Ask the supplier to confirm the test method and the certificate that will accompany the shipment. Colour should be measured against the method named in the contract, not described only as “white” or “refined”.

If you are replacing an existing supplier, match the grade on your last accepted shipment first. Changing from 45 to 100-150 (or the reverse) can change dissolution appearance and finished-product colour.
